Step 4: Restore section breaks
Open the original article URL and compare with the captured MDX. Where the original article has visual section transitions (extra spacing between sections, decorative dividers, typographic ornaments), add --- in the MDX on its own line with blank lines above and below.
Most publications (Atlantic, NYT, New Yorker) encode section breaks as CSS spacing only, which is lost during the HTML-to-Markdown conversion. These need to be restored manually by comparing with the original article.
Step 5: Preserve media embeds
If the article has an associated video or podcast (e.g., Substack, YouTube), add a responsive iframe embed at the top of the article content:

Top — stats that double as filters:

- By topic chips with live counts (Intelligence 17, How AI Works 19, Training & Data 14, Work & Labor 29, Safety 20, Culture 35, Other 114).
- By publication chips with counts (The Atlantic 75, The New York Times 74, The New Yorker 26, … down to the singletons).
- Clicking any chip toggles a filter; facets combine (venue AND topic AND text), with a "Clear" button and a live "Showing X of Y" count.
Middle — search + list: an instant client-side filter over title/publication/author (works logged-out, no API round-trip), then the reading cards sorted newest-first, with a lock icon on auth-gated readings when signed out.
Bottom — "How this collection is built": a short methodology section describing the sourcing, the browser-capture mechanism, the cleanup step, the margin notes, topic tagging, and the fair-use/attribution note, plus a link over to Resources.

The theme is deliberately monochrome with a single amber accent — no semantic color palette. So a 6-color rainbow of topic badges would fight the design. I'll use uniform, muted badges (matching the existing chip aesthetic) and can add color later if you want more differentiation.

Date gutter instead of a number. Each card now shows a compact stacked date (Jul 19 / 2026) in the left gutter, right-aligned in mono. Undated entries show —.
Facet counts are now dynamic. Topic and publication counts recompute against the current filter set. Selecting Safety & Governance drops The Atlantic to 8, NYT to 6, and dims the venues that go to 0. Each facet ignores its own selection when counting (standard faceted-search behavior) so you can still multi-select within a group.
Year side navigation, matching the Prose/meeting-page TOC. A right-hand xl: aside (ml-8 w-48, fixed top-[104px]) with a "JUMP TO" heading, year links with per-year counts (2026 → 1964), a divider, and an "About this collection" link. Same font-mono, muted → accent styling and active-state highlighting as the content TOC, driven by a scroll-spy. The list itself is now grouped under # 2026-style year headers, and the nav (years + counts) updates live with the filters — filter to Safety and it collapses to just 2026 (20).
Fixed a React key warning. The header/about content was being passed as JSX props from the server page into the client component; across the RSC boundary those multi-child elements lose their static-children marker and React flags them as a keyless list. I moved that static content inside the client component, so the page is now warning-free (verified via console capture).
Tests: the readings-index suite is up to 6 tests (added side-nav + dynamic-count coverage) — all pass, tsc clean, Biome-formatted, zero console errors/warnings.

What changed
The side nav is no longer a flat year list. It now adapts to how the readings are distributed:
- Heavy years (more than 12 readings spanning multiple months — currently just 2026, with 177) break into months. In the list they get month subheadings (
July,June…), and in the sidebar the year expands into month links with per-month counts. - Light years (2025, 2024, 2023, 2017, 2007, 1964) stay as single year links — no month clutter.
- Accordion behavior: only the year you're currently scrolled into is expanded. Scroll from 2026 down to 2025 and 2026's months collapse while 2025 highlights, driven by the same scroll-spy that now watches both year and month anchors. Clicking a month jumps straight to it and highlights it.
So at the top you see 2026 → Jul 16, Jun 44, May 47, Apr 30, Mar 35, Feb 4, Jan 1, then the quiet tail of older years. Everything still tracks the filters: narrow to Safety and the nav collapses to just the active year's relevant months.
Implementation notes: grouping is filtered → years → months, with heavy = items > 12 && months > 1; the card markup was extracted into a renderCards helper reused by both heavy (per-month) and light (whole-year) branches; the accordion mirrors the Prose TOC's max-h/opacity transition and active-expansion rule.
