How this collection is built

These readings follow the public conversation about AI while the course runs. Most are general-audience journalism. The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker supply the bulk of them, alongside essays, interviews, and the occasional podcast.

Each reading starts as a web page. A small browser tool captures the article text and saves it to the course database. We then clean the capture: ads, image credits, bylines, and newsletter boxes come out, and the article itself stays. Curly quotes and stray markup get normalized so the page reads cleanly here.

Many readings carry margin notes. A note ties a passage to something you have done in class. Training a small network. Watching a model predict the next word. Handing a task to a chatbot and checking its work. Look for the underlined links in the text.

Readings are tagged by topic and grouped by source, which is what the filters above use. New pieces are added throughout the semester as the story develops.

Everything here is provided to CS 199 UAI students under academic fair use. Each reading links back to its original source. Follow that link to read it in full and to support the publication.

The interactive tools that go with these ideas live on the Resources page.
